Brainstorm on a Dragonfly

For our next brainstorm we would love to hear your ideas on a DRAGONFLY.

What is this dragonfly’s greatest ambition?  What is he afraid of?  What is he really good at doing?  What blunders does he get into?  Let’s paint a picture of the many personality possibilities together!

Take the invitation and get your ideas out there!

  1. Something I found interesting about dragonflies is they spend most of their lives as an ugly, black, water-bound bug. They undergo a complete metamorphosis before turning into the shining jewel-like fliers we marvel at.

So for those of you who like to weave science facts into your stories – there you go!

  2. How the Dragonfly got a New Name

    A drag on a fly
    Is a bit of Mildew
For it knew it could fly
    And remember it used to
But the weight of the Mildew
    was getting it down
and now it was forced to wander round town
and go to rich houses and go to the poor
in search for just one real fantastic cure
    For though it is earthbound
    It’s thinking of Heaven
and this old dirty town, Its thinking of leaving
once cheerful its sad,its thoughts dreary once merry
like a hen that can’t fly trying to be a canary
and all because one day it deigned to sleep in
and because it got lazy mildew on its wings
But God who was visiting saw it in its plight
when all were asleep He came there at night
and cleaned up its act and restored all its wings
When the dragonfly woke it felt like a new thing
And it flapped, then it fluttered and just then it flew
And the paper boy made sure that everyone knew
That the dragonfly healed was renewed in his spirit
the paperboy laughed saying”it’s wonderful, aint it
The dragonfly laughed and cried jumping off ledges
And landing on flowers and sedges and hedges
He was light as a thistedown, flew high and airy
And the people they laughed as if he was a fairy
But he wasn’t he was just a big dragonfly
Who had life and was living it
    Up in the sky
He was going to enjoy life, fly to the Moon
Circle round Mars and come back real soon
For he was a dragonfly,Home was the Earth
This was where he loved, home of his birth
And so having been helped ,he’d help till the end
And that’s how he got the good name of Friend.

  3. The word “dragon” can be an adjective also, meaning someone who is combative or strict. Maybe our dragonfly would be like a dog fighter. That is his purpose to combat against other dragon flies for teritorial purposes or warfare in the “flying world”. You could have your dogfighter dragonflies and your drill sargent dragonflies who train the dogfighters. They would be very strict in nature just like the word “dragon” implies. Or you could have all the dragonflies be combative, but one just loves to fly and combat is not in his nature. So he flys away from his realm of combatting to seek love and friendship, only to find that other flying things don’t give him a chance because of what he is, except for one. (Maybe a firefly or something). They become friends and fly around the world convincing others that it’s okay to be different and you don’t have to be what others think you should be.

  4. How about a shy dragon fly that would hide everytime another dragon fly would come by. Although he was a smart and innovative dragon fly, a camelion if you will, he preferred to fly alone and explore.

  5. A kangaroo who doesn’t want to be a kangaroo any more. He is tired of the hopping thing and would prefer to fly like the birds. He is tired of settling for regular food. if he were a bird he could fly tothe top of the trees and get the tastiest foods and sleep in roomy nests.

  6. The Mystical Forest is an excellent start to a wonderfull and magical story. I want to add an idea. How about the nuts, leaves and brances that fall from these energetic-traveling trees, gather together and plan an attack on these trees. Since these trees have moved them selves often, confusing travelers, faires, giants, etc. For example: “I am tired of being a nut who follow that hunky oak, I’m leaving and forming my own group of …” What a twist.

  7. What if you took the story of the three little pigs and you plugged in 3 dragonflies and the big bad bulfrog.

Another idea might be to start with the little black water bound bug who must learn a series of lessons before its true beauty is unveiled as it emerges into a dragonfly.
